As we all know, hair keratin is a protein with large amounts of the sulfur-containing amino acid cysteine, which creates lateral bonds (disulfide bridges) between the various chains in which the keratin itself is structured. These lateral bonds provide solidity and elasticity to the bundles of keratin microfibers forming each individual hair. Environmental exposure and harsh treatments inevitably break these bonds, leaving negatively charged sulfate residue on the hair instead of disulfide bridges. This charge is particularly obvious in aggressively cleaned hair, which is notoriously difficult to brush and can become brittle and porous. At the moment of washing, this electric charge is used to aid in the complete removal of dirt: a negatively charged (anionic) shampoo is repelled by the negative charge of the hair (since two charges with the same sign repel each other), pulling away dirt that has combined with the fatty acids within the shampoo. The difficulty is moderating the intensity of this cleansing method. Unfortunately, there are still plenty of low-cost products with few scruples about adding strong synthetic detergents to their formulas. Poorly moderated, these harsh products ramp up cleansing to the point of destroying the hydrolipidic layer of hair and skin. Even if the product achieves decent results at first, continued use of such products inevitably leads to excessive dryness or hypersecretion (greasy hair) that is often difficult to repair. A much better solution is the use of natural anionic derivatives, perfectly capable of proper cleaning action without becoming overly aggressive: coconut ether and sulfosuccinates from plant-based fatty alcohols. The former provides complete cleansing power that is then modulated by the latter, perfect for hair and with bonus softening powers. Their combined action allows for a respectful cleansing of the natural layers and, most importantly, doesn’t strip these layers in the long term. For added restorative capacity, we took the formula even further: non-ionic and amphoteric surfactants (double-charged + and -) give hair a shiny protective film. This is why we added plant-based amides and betaines, which, in addition to a gentle cleansing action, provides the hair with a protective film that enriches it with nutrients: lanolin derivatives (which naturally promote sebum production), along with derivatives from proteins and plant mucilage quaternized to restructure the lost cuticle scales by repairing the hair, reducing static electricity, and restoring elasticity. The naturally acidic pH of the hydrolipidic layer is respected and corrected by gentle natural balancers with pH values around 4.5. Each of these characteristics is uniquely proportioned in different formulas, providing the perfect solution for each individual hair type and resulting in a truly personalized shampoo.
